About the Union
The CWU is an independent Trade Union built on truth and struggle for the oppressed and working class. July 3, 1953 operation commenced from its HQ office situated on #146 Henry Street, Port-of-Spain. At that time the Union was formerly called Communication Services General Workers Union. We are committed to the defense and advancement of the lives of our members, working people and the underprivileged in society.

If you already have recognition status of a Union in the place you work, we are unable to represent you. If you are a worker anywhere and have a matter, CWU will and can represent you.
The Secretary General
Joanne Ogeer is the current Secretary General of the Communication Workers' Union for the term 2023 to 2026, replacing the former officeholder comrade Clyde Elder who served as Secretary General for two consecutive terms 2017 to 2020 and 2020 to 2023. Sister Ogeer made history in 2020 becoming the first female President of the Union, then the first Secretary General in November 2023. Her candour and passion are the epitome of her success, not to mention her determination and being results-oriented. Her Leadership style is different and is premised on coaching and mentoring to foster effective succession planning within the CWU. AI has proven to be a pivotal influence and she believes in the advent of Technology to reach persons especially youths to educate persons about the importance of joining and being a member of a Trade Union. Her strengths are her comrades and the support she attains from them, communication, teamwork, coupled with her qualifications and experience in LAW, she feels confident that once she marries these attributes, the results are destined. The catalyst of change is here as it pertains to the dynamics of where Society et al views the importance of the Trade Union Movement. Many people think Trade Unionism is a dying class, but that must be ebbed away through education, there must be a symbiotic and respectful relationship between Companies and Unions for any objective to be realized. One of my favourite quotes:- When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.
The Union's structure
The Union's structure is its National Convention, being the highest body of the Union, then its General Council. The Executive Board is led by its Secretary General and reports to the General Council and by extension the National Convention. There are branches within the Union and they consist of a Branch Chairman and Secretary, Vice Chairman and assistant secretary/Treasurer, three (3) General Council members, and four (4) Management Committee members.
